She is a punaholic, a chronic worrier, sometimes honest to the point of being tactless. She likes books, embroidery, music ranging from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" to Dvorak's New World Symphony and "La Traviata", animals, coffee, chocolate, snow, velvet - and, in people, loyalty, kindness and intelligence (and an off-the-wall sense of humor helps). My thanks to Better Reading Preview and Penguin Random House Australia for an uncorrected proof to read and review. Recommended for all lovers of chick lit and women's fiction. Will she get back into her mother's will? Will she pay off her debts? Will she get the guy? I'm not going to tell you, you'll have to read this book yourself to find out. As she plummets further and further, you can't help but admire her optimism, and uselessness, while she rides roughshod over everyone around her. While this book doesn't have a lot of substance it's light and easy to read, and I found myself chuckling, and cringing, at Maggie's antics all the way through. ![]() The job has perks in the form of Reuben, hot ex-crim guitarist and IT expert, and Maggie spends most of her time trying to seduce him instead of trying to get her life back on track. So with the last of her mother's money she buys an old caravan so she doesn't have to live on the street, and gets a volunteer job in a charity shop through Centrelink. Maggie's life is a train wreck, she has no job, has been dumped by her boyfriend, and been disinherited by her mother for being a no-hoper. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Conjure wife book![]() ![]() ![]() I've had it in my pile for a while, and in my classic horror/fantasy reading quest, Fritz Leiber definitely is a must read. Used These Alternate Names: Maurice Breçon, Fric Lajber, Fritz Leiber, Jr., Fritz R. Leiber's capacity for endless self-reinvention and productive self-examination kept him, until his death, one of the most modern of his sf generation. Leiber's late short fiction, and the fine horror novel Our Lady of Darkness, combine autobiographical issues like his struggle with depression and alcoholism with meditations on the emotional content of the fantastic genres. Leiber's science fiction includes the planet-smashing The Wanderer in which a large cast mostly survive flood, fire, and the sexual attentions of feline aliens, and the satirical A Spectre is Haunting Texas in which a gangling, exo-skeleton-clad actor from the Moon leads a revolution and finds his true love. He found his mature voice early in the first of the sword-and-sorcery adventures featuring the large sensitive barbarian Fafhrd and the small street-smart-ish Gray Mouser he returned to this series at various points in his career, using it sometimes for farce and sometimes for gloomy mood pieces-The Swords of Lankhmar is perhaps the best single volume of their adventures. ![]() was one of the more interesting of the young writers who came into HP Lovecraft's orbit, and some of his best early short fiction is horror rather than sf or fantasy. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Monkey beach by eden robinson![]() ![]() She uses the traditional terms for what we know now to be ‘Sasquatch’ as the Haisla ‘B’gwus,’ explores Haisla spirituality, and the use of non-traditional medicines to provide the reader with different connotations of each practice, and build cultural competency. In doing so, Robinson also reclaims appropriated Haisla myths and lore. As a reader we are exposed to a plethora of topics: Haisla family structure and nomenclature, the effects of intergenerational trauma on indigenous groups, worldviews and indigenous values on the use of land and life. The author, Eden Robinson, expertly weaves Haisla cultural beliefs and practices into a mystery story of Lisa’s missing brother, Jimmy. Not that safety is a sure prospect in this Ozark country. And of how the endlessly resourceful Marty becomes stunned by the compromises and the confusion of his terrible life, until his attempt at kindness withers, but sweet-smiling Wendy (Laura Linney) emerges as the polite monster who may drag the family to safety. It’s a story of a family trying to stay a family, swept away on the flood of money and drawn to the point of murder, watching it, beholding it, and doing it. ![]() In saying that, I’m thinking of what is called the concept (created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams): of how Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a financial adviser in Chicago, gets in such trouble with the cartel that he has to retreat to Ozark country in Missouri, with his wife Wendy and their two children, Charlotte and Jonah, and get into the frenzied business of laundering immense sums of cartel cash. We’d have taken a few more murders, I think we know that’s what the show does. Ten nights in a row, we watched two episodes back to back, rationing ourselves with its first two seasons, waiting for the third. It was hard to feel any empathy for Maeve as she has quite a spoilt little girl attitude. Her relationship with her parents is disrespectful and she can be rather rude to everyone. There is nothing special about this story and it did not provoke much interest for me. However, the entertainment value is POOR and this is not a fulfilling read. Black Hat is an easy read and provides a distraction. Because it delves into the supernatural it loses any gritty urban realism. It shows how just one pill of an unknown substance can wreck your life and maybe lose your sanity. ![]() I suppose this novel is aimed at Young Adults as it highlights the dangers of taking drugs.
